Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Reaching the Island
- How do I reach the camp from Kolkata?
The most common route is taking a local train from Sealdah to Namkhana Station. From there, you take a motorized van (toto) to the ferry ghat, cross the Hatania-Doania river, and then take another toto or bus to Bagdanga or Hujjat Ghat to cross into Mousuni Island. - Can I bring my own car or bike?
You can drive to Namkhana or Patibunia Ghat, where there are parking facilities. While bikes can cross the river by boat for a small fee, cars cannot reach the island directly as there is no bridge. - What are the ferry timings?
Ferries generally run every 15–30 minutes. However, some ferry services near Patibunia may close for a lunch break between 12:00 PM and 2:45 PM, so plan your arrival accordingly. [1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Stay & Facilities
- What is the difference between a tent and a cottage?
Tents offer a more adventurous "backpacking" experience and typically use shared western toilets. Mud cottages or "Swiss tents" often provide more privacy and may include attached bathrooms. - Is there electricity and mobile network?
Electricity is limited on the island; most camps use solar power or generators. It is highly recommended to carry a power bank. Signal for Jio, Airtel, and BSNL is generally available but can be inconsistent. - Are there any ATMs on the island?
No, there are no ATMs on Mousuni Island. Please carry sufficient cash for your travel, extra food, and local tips, as digital payments may fail due to network issues.
Activities & Safety
- What is the best time to visit?
The ideal time is from October to March. Summers can be very humid, and many camps close during the monsoon (June–September) due to high tides and storm risks. - Is it safe for solo female travelers and families?
Yes, the island is generally safe and the local villagers are very hospitable. However, since it is an isolated area, solo travelers should remain cautious and follow camp guidelines. - Can I swim in the sea?
While you can bathe at the beach, be extremely careful of high tides and strong currents. Always consult the camp staff before entering the water.
Food & Essentials
