Reaching Mousuni Island is an experience in itself. It is a journey that takes you through the heart of rural South Bengal, transitioning from the bustling streets of Kolkata to the quiet, watery world of the delta. While it might seem like a long trip, every leg of the journey offers a new sight and a sense of moving further away from the chaos of city life.
The most common route starts at Sealdah Station in Kolkata. Hop on a local train heading to Namkhana. The three-hour train ride is a great way to see the lush green landscape of Bengal. Once you reach Namkhana, the real adventure begins. You’ll need to take a short "toto" (electric rickshaw) ride to the ferry ghat. From here, you cross the Hatania-Doania river. Until recently, this was a boat crossing, but now a magnificent bridge spans the water. However, most travelers still prefer the traditional vessel crossing for the authentic island feel.
After crossing the river, another toto will take you through narrow village roads, past ponds and paddy fields, to the Bagdanga Ferry Ghat. This is the final water crossing that brings you onto Mousuni Island. The boat ride across the Chinai River is brief but beautiful, often offering glimpses of local life along the banks.
Once you land on the island, the final leg is a scenic toto ride to The Dolphin Camp in Baliara. The road winds through salt pans and small huts until the sea suddenly appears on the horizon. From the moment you step off that final toto and feel the sea breeze, the travel fatigue vanishes instantly.
We recommend starting your journey early in the morning—around 7:00 or 8:00 AM—to ensure you arrive at the camp by lunchtime. This gives you the whole afternoon to settle in and enjoy the beach. If you are coming by private car, you can drive all the way to Namkhana, where there are secure parking lots available. Whichever way you choose, remember: the journey is the first chapter of your Mousuni story.
